When spring comes, the temperature starts to rise. The snow starts to melt. During this time, you will see a lot of changes on your lawn. Sometimes you might notice some strange stuff on your grass.
What is Snow Mould?
Snow mould is a fungal lawn disease that usually manifests during spring after the snow melts. While this often occurs in spring, it can happen at any season. It can appear in two forms: pink fungus and gray fungus. This lawn fungus can result in patches of dead grass in your lawn.
Snow mould thrives under a layer of snow and is normally only noticeable once the snow melts down. This occurs when snow falls and creates a blanket between grass and snow that allows for the fungus to grow. Snow mould can damage the lawn area. It is unsightly and can cause allergies and asthma in people.
Treating Snow Mould
While snow mould sounds serious, you really shouldn’t panic. Snow mould will take care of itself. It will die as temperatures increase. Gray moulds die at 7° Celsius while pink mould dies off at 15° Celsius.
If you want to get rid of it faster, you can mow your lawn because tallgrass is a good breeding ground for mould. You can also gently rake the infected areas to allow them to dry faster.
Using chemical treatments is not necessary since the grass heals itself and gets rid of the mould as temperature increases. You can resow grass seeds if there are any barren patches left behind.
