Carrion Flowers in Pots, a Unique Attraction

Carrion Flower in a PotCarrion flowers, also known as “corpse flower” or “striking flower”, usually grow in the forest. This plant is known for its large flowers. Most people think that because of its physical appearance, it is hard to propagate carrion flowers in containers when in fact, it is known to be cultivated by most botanic gardeners and private collectors around the world in pots. It is an easy to care plant which flourishes in different lighting conditions.  It can add beauty to your garden as a centerpiece or as a supplementary flower.

Though carrion flowers emit an unusual odor that smells like a rotting vegetable and some people may find it offensive, it should not hinder you from growing it in pots because this cactus-like or starfish-like flower will surprise you when it blooms.

Having at least one carrion flower in a pot could be a big help in pollination. Flies will be around when it blooms and they will help transfer pollen from one plant to another, which could result to a colorful and attractive environment. It will make your orchard look lovely and interesting provided that proper care is given.

Preparation

Prepare a six inch pot, and a potting mix. It is important that the potting mix is lightly wet, and the top is at least one inch sand or perlite. Then, prepare the seed of carrion flower or a stem cutting if possible. Remove 3 to 4 inches section of stem and let it harden for about 4 to 5 days to let the cut end callus.

Growing

Place the cut end into the potting mix. Place the pot in a shallow pan with 3 inch water. The plant should absorb the water from the bottom. When the top of the plant is already wet, remove the pan. Water again when the top inch of the plant is already dry. Too much water will cause the root to rot; when the stems begin to shrivel, it indicates that the plant badly needs water.

Maintenance

Carrion flower requires bright light to grow, keep it in full sun or with a temperature of 55 degree Celsius all year round. Add liquid fertiliser once a month and you will be surprised once the flower starts to bloom.
