As part of its ongoing urban regeneration program, IOTA was commissioned by Birmingham City Council to supply granite planters for the downtown shopping district.
These stone pots are sited throughout the district, along the pedestrianised zone of New Street to the south, north up Corporation Street, and west to the Cathedral Square. In addition to established tree planting, IOTA’s plant pots are the principal form of soft landscaping used within the scheme.
IOTA’s Granite outdoor planters were chosen for their solid construction and considerable weight, making them particularly appropriate for municipal areas. The scheme uses 60 of IOTA’s largest stock planters – The Taper 800.
The majority of the stone pots are clustered in offset groups of three, and are planted seasonally. In the winter, as shown here, hardy evergreens such as bamboo and Cordyline are used to provide lasting colour and structural interest. The plant pots are positioned to serve a wide variety of functions – such as directing pedestrian flow; identifying intersections; and signposting key locations (e.g. seating areas and cab ranks).
